Paint Medicine

Cultivating colors and plant knowledge from local and medicinal plants….

Join Melissa and LeAnn for a hands-on workshop featuring some of our favorite local, medicinal and highly pigmented plant relatives! We will demonstrate how to make inks and paints from plant material, while also learning about the plants themselves and how they are beneficial for human health. Practice pulling color from plants to make art and learn about medicinal preparations and methods, while interacting with the herbs themselves medicinally through tea, tincture or other ways.

What students get:

  • 3 hour instructional + hands on workshop making plant pigments from local medicinal plants

  • Samples of the same plants in tea, tincture, salve or whatever form used medicinally, to experience while we make pigments.

  • Information about the plants: medicinal uses, how to prepare, harvests etc.

  • Take home a few small vials of paint samples.

  • Time to play with other colors previously made, create a color wheel, and paint something unique!

  • Detailed handouts with more information.

Melissa is a local artist, seed saver, gardener and co-founder of Working Food. Her art is inspired by the natural world around her, and includes colors made from plants and other earth materials. LeAnn is the founder of A Thousand Leaves Herb Shop, weaving a love for deep ecology, medicinal plants, and vitalism into her work as a community and clinical herbalist.
